studied Economics at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. After graduating, she joined the Australian Bureau of Statistics in Canberra and worked on the design of household surveys. She moved to the Australian National University in 1982, and in 1988 joined Professor Paul Bourke to establish a centre for bibliometric research within the Research School of Social Sciences. She went on to head the unit, the Research Evaluation and Policy Project, from 1999 until her "retirement" in 2009. She now undertakes contract research assessment projects, with a focus on bibliometrics, for a number of funding organisations and government agencies, both Australian and international.
