Utilization of Bibliometric Indicators for University Benchmarking

Several universities are currently conducting a project dealing with the university benchmarking and the comparison of key figures for research and teaching. The project is supervised by the Higher Education Information System (HIS). The aim of the project is the development of a practical set of indicators which can be used for internal university benchmarking and steering along with a more general benchmarking model. In order to get a complete picture of the activities, in a pilot study iFQ will provide data with regard to research performance. In an accompanying project within the Competence Centre for Bibliometrics the adequacy of bibliometric indicators for university benchmarking will be tested. Furthermore bibliometric data will be related to other data (e.g. staff per professor) in order to identify appropriate comparative indicators. During the analysis new strategies in research evaluation (e.g. quality vs. quantity) and emanating effects will be analyzed as well.
